Things to do
-
If you have time to explore Portland while you’re in town, these are a few places we genuinely love and return to often. Think of them as small stops from our own version of Scenes From a Portland Weekend.
Pasar
One of our favorite meals in Portland. Pasar serves beautiful Indonesian dishes that feel both comforting and vibrant. It’s the kind of place where every plate makes you pause for a second before digging in. For us it’s also a little nostalgic, a reminder of home flavors and long dinners where you order more than you planned to because everything is too good not to try.Screen Door
A Portland classic and one of the city’s most beloved Southern restaurants. Screen Door is famous for its fried chicken, waffles, and rich brunch plates. It’s cozy, lively, and the perfect place to gather with friends over comfort food that feels celebratory.Mox Boarding House
Part board-game store, part café, part hangout. Mox is one of our favorite places to spend an afternoon. You can browse a huge library of games, grab a drink or a snack, and sit down with friends to play. It’s playful, a little nerdy in the best way, and a great way to spend a relaxed evening.Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade
A Portland institution and one of the best barcades around. Ground Kontrol has floors of classic arcade games, pinball machines, and retro consoles, along with drinks and late-night energy. It’s loud, nostalgic, and ridiculously fun, the kind of place where you go in for one game and end up staying much longer than expected. -
If you're traveling in for the weekend, we highly recommend giving yourself a little extra time to explore Portland.
Here are a few local spots and activities if you're making a weekend of it.
Explore Washington Park
One of Portland’s most beautiful areas, Washington Park is home to miles of walking trails, gardens, and incredible city views. While you're there, you can visit the International Rose Test Garden, which usually still has blooms well into August and overlooks the downtown skyline.
Powell’s City of Books
Portland’s legendary bookstore, Powell's City of Books, takes up an entire city block and is the largest independent bookstore in the world. It’s easy to spend an hour or two browsing its maze of rooms and shelves.
Mississippi Avenue
Just a short drive from the wedding venue, Mississippi Avenue is one of the city’s most lively streets, filled with restaurants, breweries, live music venues, and shops. It’s a great place for brunch, coffee, or a casual evening out.
Alberta Arts District
The Alberta Arts District is known for its colorful murals, galleries, and excellent restaurants. It’s a fun area to wander, grab a drink, and experience Portland’s creative side.
Portland’s Food Cart Pods
One of the city’s most beloved traditions is its food cart scene, with hundreds of carts offering everything from Thai and Mexican to vegan comfort food. Some of the most popular pods include Hawthorne Asylum Food Cart Pod and Cartopia Food Cart Pod.
Forest Park
For guests who enjoy nature, Forest Park is one of the largest urban forests in the United States, with more than 80 miles of hiking trails just minutes from the city.

Early August is one of the most vibrant times of year in Portland. Outdoor patios are busy, parks are full, and the city tends to host plenty of summer events and markets throughout the weekend.
While specific festival schedules for August 8, 2026 may be announced closer to the date, Portland often has:
Outdoor concerts and neighborhood street fairs
Farmers markets across the city
Weekend craft and vintage markets
Pop-up food events and brewery festivals
Even without a specific event planned, August evenings are perfect for exploring the city’s neighborhoods, grabbing dinner on a patio, or taking a sunset walk along the river.
-
Typical early August weather:
Daytime temperatures: mid-70s to mid-80s °F
Evenings: mid-50s to mid-60s °F
Rain: very unlikely
Portland can cool down quickly after sunset, especially if you're outdoors, so light layers are always a good idea.
What we recommend packing:

Portland in August is usually warm and comfortable during the day, perfect for dresses, short sleeves, and breathable fabrics.A light jacket or sweater
Evenings can get cooler, particularly if you're out exploring the city or staying out after the reception.Comfortable walking shoes
Many of Portland’s best neighborhoods are very walkable, especially areas like the Pearl District, Mississippi Avenue, and Alberta.Sunglasses and sunscreen
Summer days are bright and often cloudless.A slightly warmer layer for the evening
If you plan to be out late or walking around the city at night, a light coat or overshirt can make things much more comfortable.
